OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE (O&M) BUS CONTRACT OPPORTUNITIES IN INDIA

An efficient public transport system is a key pre-requisite for the sustained development of a city. It helps citizens to meet their travel needs in an economical, safe and energy efficient manner. However, cities in India have not invested adequately in developing good quality public transport systems. Only 63 of the 458 Indian cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants have a formal city bus system.

The bus sector in India has witnessed a major push in India in recent years with the participation of private sectors. For the last decade, many authorities have been looking to introduce Gross Cost Contract (GCC) as 10 cities have introduced such a contract. It is expected that there will be more cities to introduce such contacts. Furthermore, existing cities are looking to increase the fleet under GCC.

Currently, there are seven bus tenders out in the market, including four tenders for the operation and maintenance of electric buses on Gross Cost. The authorities from Delhi, Gurgaon (Haryana), Bhuvneshwar (Orissa), Bangalore (Karnataka), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Jaipur (Rajasthan) are looking to award contracts for more than 1,860 buses collectively.
