BIG BOOST FOR PRIVATE INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

In order to boost private investment in charging infrastructure in the country, Ministry of Power (MoP) has issued the "clarification on charging infrastructure for Electric Vehicles with reference to the provisions of the Electricity Act 2003" on 13 April 2018. The power sector is regulated under The Electricity Act 2003.

DELHI GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED GREEN BUDGET – IS IT SUFFICIENT FOR THE CITY?

Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) announced the annual budget 2018-19 on 21 March 2018 with a focus on improving air quality in the city. The government called it a 'green Budget' which will work on 26-point action plan.

The action plan will combines 26 programs and schemes of Transport, Power, Environment and PWD (Public Works Department) for devising a unified system of pollution control, bringing down levels of different pollutants.

ELECTRIC BUSES PROCUREMENT IN INDIA – INDIAN CITIES GOT THE VIABLE RATES

Last 2 months has witnessed a greater action in the space of electric buses. Department of Heavy Industries (DHI), Government of India sanctioned INR 4.37 billion (US$ 67 million) for the procurement of electric buses, e-taxis and e-autos in December 2017. The department has selected 11 cities with one million-plus population for the procurement of 390 electric buses, and is providing funds to the tune of INR 10 million (US$ 150,000) per bus.

DELHI METRO STARTED THE FIRST AUTOMATED METRO LINE IN INDIA

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) started the operation on its Line 8 (Magenta Line), connecting Kalkaji Mandir to Botanical Garden (12.64 kms). Hon’ble Prime Minister of India flagged off the first journey on 25 December 2017.  DMRC will start the remaining stretch of the line from Janakpuri West to Kalkaji Mandir (23.34 kms) by March 2018.

HYDERABAD CITY GOT ITS METRO SYSTSM AND BECAME TENTH CITY WITH METRO

Hon’ble Prime Minister of India inaugurated the metro system in Hyderabad city on 28 November 2017.  The metro opened to the public from 29 November 2017, covering a 30-km stretch and is expected to carry 1.7 million passengers each day. The construction was started in June 2012, but the project was delayed owing to land acquisition.

MOHUA UNVEILED URBAN GREEN MOBILITY SCHEME 2017

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) unveiled much awaited "Urban Green Mobility Scheme 2017", as the next phase of National Urban Renewal Mission. The ministry is already running "Smart Cities Mission" and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). However, these programmes are focusing on urban infrastructure mainly utilities. Therefore, there was a need to have a separate sustainable urban mobility scheme having pan city coverage with emphasis on improving access of citizens.
